Educational Equity in the Social Studies: A Research Symposium
August 3, 2021
11:00 am – 4:30 pm EDT
Platform: Zoom
The National Center for Research in Geography Education is organizing a symposium featuring presentations by researchers who leverage large-scale federal datasets to study inequalities in K-12 student outcomes in geography, civics, and U.S. history.
The symposium is a virtual event that will take place on August 3, 2021 with the support of the National Assessment Governing Board and National Center for Education Statistics. We encourage geographers, education researchers, and other interested parties to join us and learn more about how large-scale federal datasets can be leveraged to address policy-relevant questions about educational equity in the nation’s schools. There is no charge to attend the symposium, but pre-registration is required:
Attendees will learn about a variety of geospatial and educational assessment data available from the U.S. Department of Education and the associated training opportunities for researchers.
The first session from 11:00 am – 12:15 pm EDT will provide an overview of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the types of research questions that can be addressed with the extensive data on achievement and schooling that is available from NAEP.
The second session is scheduled for 1:00 – 2:15 pm EDT. Presenters will provide examples of research that has been conducted with NAEP social studies achievement data and what is known about the nature of inequality in student outcomes in the social studies.
The symposium will conclude with a session scheduled for 3:00 – 4:30 pm EDT. Presenters will discuss methods of linking multiple large-scale federal datasets to investigate geographic inequalities in education and other factors associated with gaps and trends in student achievement.
